Indie Review: Powerverse's C.H.E.S.S.

This edition of the Indie Review we take a look at C.H.E.S.S., an upcoming Kickstarter from the Powerverse. As indicated on the cover, C.H.E.S.S. stands for Command Headquarters of Espionage and Strategic Strikes. A suitable name for a group that deals in covert assignments with a green light to the use of deadly physical force.

The book has high production value with credits of  created and plots by Alfred Paige, plots and written by Alex De-Gruchy, pencils and inks by Jc Fabul, colors by Jorge Cortes with assist by Bryan Arfel Magnaye and letters by Troy Peteri. All involved are very professional with talent on par with bigger mainstream companies.

The story unfolds in a very cinematic style and the cast of characters that the C.H.E.S.S. team is comprised of has the flavor of a reluctant military team being dispatched overseas for some high stakes action ala Predator. A key difference, however, is the inclusion of abilities specific to each of the operatives, ala the villainous opponents in The Running Man while I'm at it making Schwarzenneger film references. The characters are well designed and well rendered throughout the story. One last Arnie reference will be the inclusion of an android on the team which is not an observation of mine but rather one of the characters who refers to him as a "Terminator". I say this all in praise though as one can do much worse than invoke imagery of the films starring the Austrian Oak.

The plot centers around the subject of arms dealers utilizing advanced technology and weaves a convincing story of this subject matter. There is also a subplot of a villainous family with seemingly cybernetic enhancements that is quite intriguing. Overall, the Powerverse has been putting out some high quality comics and it seems they have done the same with C.H.E.S.S..
